Named after the towering sequoia trees, which symbolize strength and resilience, Secoya Learning provides a learning environment that encourages children to grow tall and strong in both mind and spirit. Inspired by nature’s wisdom, we set out to build a school that combines hands-on learning with real-world experiences.
We are a family of four who relocated from Canada to Costa Rica in 2022 with the vision of creating a unique educational environment for our children. Our goal was to move away from traditional schooling and provide them with opportunities to grow not only academically but also socially, physically, creatively, and emotionally. We wanted to give our children the chance to explore the world differently, fostering well-rounded development beyond the usual classroom experience.
We founded our school to provide children with a recognized education while making sure each child is truly seen, heard, and valued. As a family-run business supporting other families, we strive to help every student reach their full potential—not just academically, but also culturally, artistically, and physically. Our immersive and tailored approach offers more than just traditional academics; it creates a truly global learning experience that fosters a lifelong love of learning.
We are committed to helping your child achieve nationally recognized qualifications, ensuring a smooth transition back to traditional schools or when applying to universities around the world.
Nature studies connect students to the incredible environment around them while teaching them how to care for and protect their world.
Strengthening problem-solving and critical-thinking skills is an essential foundation for any child’s success in future higher education.
Combining structure and creativity, it fosters independent learning, self-discipline, and a lifelong curiosity for knowledge.
Our students enjoy thoughtfully designed workspaces, with different rooms for quiet focus and diverse learning areas that support their well-being. We believe every child thrives in an environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
Our grounds feature a purpose-built pool, jungle gym and a vegetable garden, encouraging movement, exploration and hands-on learning every day. Nestled in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, Secoya Learning offers an oceanfront setting where students thrive physically, emotionally and academically through constant connection with the natural world.
Beyond official teachers, we welcome guest experts and volunteers from around the world who bring exciting skills, languages, and perspectives beyond what official curriculum provide. These unique opportunities allow children to explore subjects and experiences not typically found in mainstream classrooms, broadening their horizons and opening their minds to the endless possibilities, places, and careers that await them.
Our school offers immersive excursions into the jungle and to stunning waterfalls, giving students hands-on experiences to understand the natural world. These adventures build knowledge of local ecosystems and a sense of environmental responsibility. Located right on the beach in the heart of the Osa Peninsula, Secoya Learning works with L.A.S.T, inspiring students to protect sea turtles and become stewards of the planet.
We would be delighted to welcome your children to our school. Please contact us directly for more information.
The school year runs from November to September. We are closed in October for a break and annual planning.
A typical day begins at 8:00 a.m., with a morning break at 10:00 and a lunch break at 12:00. Students return at 12:45 for an afternoon session that runs until 2:30 p.m. The day is enriched with regular breaks and a mix of indoor and outdoor activities designed to keep children engaged, focused, and excited about learning.
Tuition is $650USD per month with no long-term commitment. This includes enrollment and materials, but lunch is not included. A reduced rate is available for part-time attendance. Additional contributions may be requested for excursions.
Yes, children can attend either five days a week (Monday to Friday) or choose a reduced schedule on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday only. Tuition fees are then adjusted to $500USD per month.
Lessons are taught in English, with additional Spanish classes included to help develop your child's language skills.
Secoya Learning Center is not currently accredited. However, accreditation options and the possibility of obtaining official transcripts may be available in the near future, with additional costs. If accreditation is an important factor for your family, feel free to contact us directly. We’re happy to discuss your specific needs and provide personalized guidance.
